“The heart of human excellence often begins to beat when you discover a pursuit that absorbs you, frees you, challenges you, or gives you a sense of meaning, joy or passion.”– Terry Orlick
We’ve all heard the saying, do what you love and the money will follow. However, amid the chaos of becoming self-sufficient, doing what we think is expected of us, and obtaining the “American Dream”, all the while staying fit, finding love, and trying to have a little fun, it’s easy to lose sight of what we’re really passionate about – that is if we ever knew what it was in the first place. Justifications like, “the money’s too good to walk away from, I like my lifestyle, or when I retire, I’ll have time to do what I love,” become facts as we reach out to all sorts of destructive things in an effort to fill this void.
The undeniable truth is that real fulfillment lies in doing work that is truly meaningful and unique to you, and you know when you got it. You feel energized after long hours of work and find that you have great discipline to complete what you’ve started, where before you had none. You no longer want to rush off to your next vacation, escaping your uninspired life, because now you can’t wait to keep doing that thing that you’re doing. If it sounds like I’m speaking in Chinese, (at one point it did to me) then the next three steps are for you:
1. LISTEN – There is a voice inside of you that is different from all the commotion in your mind telling you what you should do and where to need to be. It’s literally calling out to you, but you have to quiet the other noise in order to hear it. This is your intuitive wisdom, and it knows what you truly desire. To access it on a more regular basis, close your eyes and meditate. Meditation is where all universal truths and the answers for which you’re looking live. I know that it may seem hard, but like anything, the more you do it the easier it becomes. I’m always surprised when people tell me, “I don’t want to know the truth.” No matter what you’ve done up until now, if you align with the truth of that voice inside, your life will improve. Simple as that. After years of silencing her with distraction after distraction, I finally heard my inner wisdom tell me that the gig was up, and it was time to finally start doing something that really matters to me. My happiness in this lifetime depended on it. Problem was, I’d been ignoring her for so long, I honestly didn’t know what would bring me great joy and meaning.
2. SET A DIRECTIVE – Each night before bed, I began setting the directive, “I am a passionate creator, doing deeply fulfilling work that brings me great happiness and joy.” About a month later, a friend asked me to write a press release for a teen med spa (of all random things)! Mind you, I hadn’t written anything aside from an email or a thank you letter in over ten years! What seemed insignificant was actually a very important step because it reminded me how much I enjoy writing. I now know that nothing is random and when we set a clear directive, we will create a series of events that will align us with our intuitive wisdom.
3. ACT – There is power in boldness. When you follow the truth of that inner voice, you are vibrating in gratitude which will serve as a magnet attracting opportunities to you. You are acknowledging your intuitive wisdom and saying, THANK YOU for the message, more of that please!
We are here this lifetime in each of our bodies for a reason. Our life’s purpose is to find that reason, act on it and light ourselves up, so we can then turn our light on others and make the world a better place. These three things can help you find your light. Enjoy!
